Salaam alaykum !
Below, you’ll find a selection of preview lessons from The A1A2 Beginner's Wolof Course!
Please keep in mind that these videos are being shown out of context, so don’t worry if everything doesn't make perfect sense right away.
In the full course, each video is introduced step-by-step, ensuring everything is clear and easy to follow by the time you get to it!
These previews are only meant to give you a taste of the course and my teaching style!
Video 1: Naomi meets Ibrahima
(Module 3, Lesson 2)
This is what I call an Anchor Lesson. It sets the stage for the entire module by placing you in a real-life situation.
In this lesson, you will follow a natural conversation between two Wolof speakers, Naomi and Ibrahima, as they meet for the first time and introduce themselves.
Every module in the course begins with an anchor lesson that immerses you in context. It is then followed by a breakdown lesson and a series of grammar and vocabulary lessons.
Together, these lessons give you the tools and confidence you need to master the skills introduced in the module.
Video 2: Introduction to Wolof Subject Pronouns
(Module 3, Lesson 4)
In this grammar lesson, I introduce you to what I believe is one of the most important concepts in Wolof grammar: Subject Pronouns.
I’ll explain what they are, how to use them, and place special emphasis on the subject pronouns used to convey emphasis (no pun intended).
I might be biased, but this is my favorite lesson so far! You’ll probably notice how much fun I had creating it!
This lesson provides a great example of my approach to grammar instruction. I aim to blend fun with education while keeping the material simple, clear, and engaging.
Video 3: Pre-nasalized consonants
(Module 1, Lesson 5)
This lesson, taken from the first module of the course (which focuses on the Wolof alphabet) introduces you to a unique category of consonants you’ve likely never heard of: pre-nasalized consonants.
These consonants play a crucial role in Wolof, and it’s rare to come across a sentence that doesn't use them.
Pronunciation is a fundamental part of any language learning journey. If you’re unable to pronounce words correctly, it can negatively impact your progress and make communication with others more difficult.
That’s why the first module of the course is entirely dedicated to pronunciation. I teach you every sound in Wolof, including the combinations that produce different sounds.
Throughout the end, you’ll complete three guided practice activities where I help you read Wolof words step-by-step.
By the end of this module, reading Wolof will no longer be a mystery!
Video 4: Common Occupations
(Module 3, Lesson 12)
Throughout the course, you’ll learn plenty of new words and expressions from the included dialogues and dedicated vocabulary lessons.
These vocabulary lessons are designed to equip you with the essential words and phrases you need to communicate effectively in specific settings, while the grammar lessons focus on helping you understand sentence structure and how to create your own sentences.
This particular lesson is a simple example of the vocabulary lessons, focusing on Wolof nouns to give you a solid foundation.
